Mon Ami Gabi calls itself both a bistro and a French steak house. They serve bistro foods, including soups, sandwiches, crepes and quiche. The steak is served French style, meaning a 1/3" thick piece of round which has been tenderized and is served with various sauces. The steak entrees are served with frites, of course, which here take the shape of shoestring fries. They also offer a number of classics, like roast chicken, pork shank and six fish dishes.
Two of the appetizers I tried are great. The pate is among the best I've ever eaten, and the smoked salmon, served with brioche toast points and creme fraiche, is an excellent way to start a meal.
The daily specials are very popular, and they often run out of them before dinner is over. They are worth planning a dinner around. Sunday the special is cassoulet, $20, Monday pork sausage with charcuterie, $25, Tuesday roast duck, $20, Wednesday short ribs $22, Thursday lamb TBone, $33, Friday, Bouillabaise $25, and Saturday Roast Rib eye is $30. Judging from the short ribs (also available as a sandwich on Wednesday's lunch), these are among their best dishes.
Fish dishes are not inexpensive, $15 to $18. Steak dishes are even higher, $18 to $40 for a 22 oz bone-in rib eye. The majority are in the $20 and $30 range, which I think high for this cut of beef. But there are some bargains to be had. I like their salads a lot, and they are expensive only when they put tuna or salmon on top of them. Side dishes are mostly $7. Burgers and sandwiches are $9 to $15 at lunch.
I love crepes, but did not care for them as prepared. They are made with buckwheat flour, the newest fashion on restaurant menus. Though I did not like them at all, you might. But they are available with regular flour crepes, which they use in their dessert crepes. You might want to ask for them. They are a bargain at $9 and $10 at lunch.
